ABOUT MOONRACER ANIMAL RESCUE

As a 501(c)(3) not for profit animal rescue organization, Moonracer was founded by Manatee County resident Lisatrans Williams, who has a long history working with animals.

Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, Lisa went to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, with the Humane Society of the United States to assist with the stranded, lost and abandoned animals that had been left behind after the evacuations. While there, Lisa and her partner, David, who accompanied her, helped more than 500 animals in need of loving care and medical treatment.

Upon her return to Florida, Lisa brought home Barry, a Greyhound/Shepherd mix that nobody claimed after the hurricane. Barry was Lisa’s beloved companion for a little more than five years, and when he journeyed to the Rainbow Bridge, she founded Moonracer Animal Rescue in his honor.

In addition to serving an internship with an elephant sanctuary in Arkansas, Lisa also has been a turtle watch volunteer on Anna Maria Island for six years. She also has worked for PETA and the Humane Society of the United States.

As a vocal advocate and supporter of Manatee County’s on-going effort to become a no-kill community, Lisa—along with Moonracer’s board of directors and team of volunteers—works hard to save lives in the county in which she lives, primarily by pulling animals from Manatee County Animal Services in an effort to “make dreams come true” by removing dogs and cats from shelters and adopting them into “happy, loving homes.”

Moonracer Animal Rescue often rescues dogs that others have left behind, including big dogs, black dogs, injured dogs, heartworm positive dogs, abandoned dogs, shy dogs, senior dogs, puppies, “adora-bulls” and dogs with mange, as well as cats and kitten’s too!

“We’re just crazy for animals!” Lisa says.

One recent case that has been widely publicized in our community is the story of Anastasia, a Moonracer Animal mr-annaRescue “Special Love Project.” The Old English Bulldog, who was not only emaciated and suffering from a myriad of health conditions, including heartworm and a genetic eye condition, but who also was unable to walk due to paralysis in her back legs.

Moonracer Animal Rescue took in the owner-surrendered pup who had been used to breed puppies, despite a veterinarian’s report that read, “Due to the severity of condition and suffering, humane euthanasia is recommended.”

With the assistance of generous community donations, thousands of dollars have been spent on Anastasia’s care, which has included visits with veterinarians, veterinary surgeons, veterinary neurologists and veterinary ophthalmologists.

Tim Karau, who serves as a board member for Moonracer, took Anastasia into his own home, and cooked all of her meals, using the most nutrient-rich ingredients to help restore Ana’s health.

img_1168Since January, Anastasia (which is a Greek name that aptly means “resurrection”) has made dramatic improvements, gaining both weight and the use of her back legs. She has become Moonracer Animal Rescue’s mascot, serving as an ideal representative that undeniably illustrates how medical attention and love can, indeed, “make dreams come true.”
